Types of Employment

UTD offers students many different types of opportunities to gain employment experience.

Student Employment Opportunities

At the University of Texas at Dallas, student employment is categorized primarily into two types: Student Assistants and Federal Work-Study Student Assistants.

Student Assistants are part-time roles available to all eligible students across various departments on campus.

Federal Work-Study Student Assistants are part-time roles which may be located on or off campus, with a portion of their wages subsidized by the federal government. Click here to learn more about the UTD Federal Work-Study program.

All students processed by the Student Employment team are hourly paid, non-benefits eligible employees.

Student Assistants

Student Assistant roles are open to all enrolled students who meet basic eligibility criteria, offering opportunities across various departments on campus. Student Assistants work part-time and directly contribute to university operations.

Example Positions

  • Student Fitness Instructor for UREC
  • Peer Tutor for the Student Success Center
  • Help Desk Analyst for the Office of Information Technology

On-Campus FWS Student Assistants

On-Campus Federal Work-Study Student Assistant roles are just like other Student Assistant roles on campus. Participants in this federal aid program work in campus departments that utilize government funds to subsidize a portion of their wages.

Example Positions

  • Student Fitness Instructor for UREC
  • Peer Tutor for the Student Success Center
  • Help Desk Analyst for the Office of Information Technology

Off-Campus FWS Student Assistants

Off-Campus Federal Work-Study Student Assistant roles are part-time positions are with external organizations that have agreements with the university for Federal Work-Study. They blend practical experience with community service.

Example Positions

  • Office Assistant for the National Math and Science Initiative
  • After-Care Assistant for Kids University
  • AVID Tutor for Plano or Richardson Independent School District

Other Student Jobs at UTD

There are some student roles on campus that the Student Employment team does not manage. These include stipend roles, retail employment, and assistantships.

Stipend Roles

Students in stipend roles are employed by UTD for select departments. These positions could include Peer Advisors, Writers for the Mercury, or other contributors to Student Media.

Retail Employment

Students in these roles are employed by affiliate retailers that are authorized to operate on campus. These students may meet specific requirements or be asked to comply with external guidelines set by the individual employers. Examples of retail employment include Chick-Fil-A, UTD Bookstore, UTD Tech Store, or Dining Services.

Assistantships

Students in these roles are employed by academic departments, professors, and research labs on campus. These students may be asked to meet specific academic and department criteria. Students in this category are exclusively hired and on-boarded by the UTD Human Resources department. Examples of assistantships include Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Undergraduate Assistant, and Graduate Assistant.
