Training & Development

Training is essential to ensuring that our students are not only able to get hired on successfully with a department, but function in their roles as productive workers afterward.

With this focus on development, we find that student assistants leave their roles with increased confidence in planning for their work, learning how to better plan to execute their work and thinking more objectively about their specific skillsets, unique strengths and areas for improvement.

Some common practices for departments welcoming new student employees may include:

  • Familiarizing students with regular department functions and purpose or mission
  • Introducing student assistants to internal teams and other student assistants in the department
  • Ensuring access to relevant equipment, technologies and systems
  • Demonstrating thorough examples of specific daily tasks and duties
  • Providing schedules for work in a convenient and accessible manner for reference
  • Communicating supervisor preferences for communicating about emergencies, absence notifications etc…
  • Allowing access to department-specific training or procedure manuals, information or directories as appropriate
  • Confirming specific expectations for student performance
  • Discussing evaluation periods and procedures
  • Letting students know how your department chooses to celebrate progress or “wins” on a regular basis

Compliance Training

The Student Employment Office works with Institutional Compliance to ensure all student employees complete their Compliance Training as required for all university employees.

Students are invited to complete this training by the Office of Institutional Compliance directly and departments are welcome to request additional trainings for their students as deemed necessary or desired for their particular role.

Professional Development

The university offers a handful of systems for self-guided training. We highly encourage all faculty, staff, and students to use these tools to continue developing personally and professionally.
